Feeding Rumen-Protected Choline to Transition Dairy Cows

چکیده
Choline [(CH3)3N+CH2CH2OH], also known as trimethyl ethanolamine, is an essential component of mammalian diets as it is required for normal function of cells. It was discovered by Andreas Strecker in 1862, but it remained unrecognized as an essential nutrient for humans until 1998, when dietary reference intakes were established. Choline was initially determined to be essential in the prevention of fatty liver in rats and dogs (Best and Huntsman, 1932). Choline is key compound for the synthesis of 2 important molecules, phosphatidylcholine and acetylcholine (Figure 1).

Effects of Feeding Rumen Protected Choline and Vitamin E on Milk Yield, Milk Composition, Dry Matter Intake, BodyCondition Score and Body Weight in Early Lactating Dairy Cows
Twenty four primiparous and multiparous Holstein cows on early lactation, beginning five weeks postpartum, were used for four weeks to investigate the effects of supplemention of rumen-protected choline (RPC) or vitamin E on milk yield, milk composition, dry matter intake, body condition score and body weight. The cows were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: I)no supplement (...
متن کاملRumen-protected choline: A significance effect on dairy cattle nutrition
Choline is a vitamin-like substance it has multi-function in animal production, reproduction, and health. The transition period is most crucial stage in lactation cycle of dairy cows due to its association with negative hormonal and energy balances. Unfortunately, unprotected choline easily degrades in the rumen; therefore, choline added to the diet in a rumen-protected form. The use of rumen-p...
متن کاملRegulation of Nutritional Metabolism in Transition Dairy Cows: Energy Homeostasis and Health in Response to Post-Ruminal Choline and Methionine
This study investigated the effects of rumen-protected methionine (RPM) and rumen-protected choline (RPC) on energy balance, postpartum lactation performance, antioxidant capacity and immune response in transition dairy cows. Forty-eight multiparous transition cows were matched and divided into four groups: control, 15 g/d RPC, 15 g/d RPM or 15 g/d RPC + 15 g/d RPM. Diet samples were collected ...
متن کاملThe role of rumen-protected choline in hepatic function and performance of transition dairy cows.
High-producing dairy cows enter a period of negative energy balance during the first weeks of lactation. Energy intake is usually sufficient to cover the increase in energy requirements for fetal growth during the period before calving, but meeting the demand for energy is often difficult during the early stages of lactation. A catabolic state predominates during the transition period, leading ...
متن کاملMilk yield persistency and its relationship with health problems in Holstein dairy cows supplemented with different levels of ruminally protected methionine and choline
Forty Holstein dairy cows in their first and second lactation were used in a lactation study from 4-week prepartum through 14-week postpartum to investigate the potential effect of feeding different levels of ruminally protected methionine and choline on milk yield persistency of Holstein dairy cows. Cows were randomly assigned to receive one of the following treatments: 18 g/d of rumen-protect...
